Connacht Senior Football Final
May 31st, 2011 by amongey3766Athenry Vocational School 3..10 Davitt College Castlebar 1…5
Athenry VS blazed into the All Ireland semi final in Garrymore on Wednesday 9th March by easily disposing of defending champions Davitt College Castlebar. Athenry went into this match as underdogs considering both teams met in the Junior final the previous week and Davitt College romped to a 15 point victory.
Athenry opened their account with a long range point from Michael Hession but the Mayo boys responded quickly. The first 15 minutes was a very tight affair both teams exchanging points. The turning point of the game came when Craig Kennedy who had a man of the match performance found the net after a great move. This was followed in the 20th minute by an opportunist goal by Dylon Murphy after the ball rebounded off the post. This left the half time score 2…4 to 0…5.
Athenry continued to dominate the second half, having the upper hand in most positions, the final nail in the coffin for the Mayo boys came in the 45th minute when Michael Hessions shot rattled the Castlebar net. Davitt College was awarded a penalty in the 50th minute but this only helped to give respectability to the scoreline.
Barry Keane’s move from the full forward position to act as an extra defender proved to be a trump card and helped to reinforce a very solid back line. This is only the 2nd time in the school’s history to contest the All Ireland semi final.
